Pawns of Chaos is Brian Craig's 2001 standalone Warhammer 40,000 novel, set on the medieval world of Sigmatus, where an isolated society's resistance to Imperial rule draws two young people into the service of Chaos. When the Imperium attempts to bring the last independent regions of Sigmatus under its control, Dathan and Hycilla become caught up with the rebel forces opposing the invasion. Their struggle brings them into the plans of Gavalon the Great, a powerful sorcerer determined to summon a daemon from the Warp to turn the tide against the Imperium. As the conflict escalates, they find themselves caught between the Imperium, the rebels and the forces of Chaos. An unusual early Warhammer 40,000 novel with a strongly medieval setting, Pawns of Chaos was later reissued under Black Library's Heretic Tomes banner alongside other books whose portrayal of the setting had become inconsistent with later lore.
